How Career Signal works

Most career tests are a black box. Ours isn’t. This page shows the exact weights, rules and limitations behind every recommendation — rendered from the same code that scores you.

What we measure

Six stages of evidence — ability and behaviour, not just stated interests.

1. Cognitive Ability

Measures reasoning, pattern recognition, verbal understanding, spatial thinking, and systems thinking. Some questions are timed to capture fluency, but accuracy matters more than speed.

2. Learning Speed

Measures how quickly you understand a new concept after a short lesson. Already knowing something is different from learning it quickly.

3. Career Simulations

Gives you mini work tasks from different career worlds. We measure how you think through the work, not whether you already know the field.

4. Work Style

Measures how you prefer to work: alone or in teams, structured or open-ended, cautious or risk-taking.

5. Persistence & Curiosity

Measures how you respond to challenge, optional exploration, retries, and effort.

6. Values & Reality

Captures what matters to you — income, stability, impact, freedom, creativity, balance, prestige — plus practical context like family hopes and budget. There are no right answers, and nothing here changes your aptitude scores. It adds a reality lens to your report.

How recommendations are computed

  1. Your responses become 22 trait scores (0–100), each tagged with how much evidence supports it and from how many independent stages.
  2. Each career cluster has fixed, published trait weights (below). Your fit = the weighted sum of your traits. Nothing else.
  3. Prerequisite gates pull down paths lacking key evidence (e.g. B.Arch needs spatial strength) — shown as “Needs More Evidence”, never “not suited”.
  4. Enjoyment and behavioural interest can nudge a fit by at most ±5 points. Interest never outranks ability evidence.
  5. Confidence reflects completeness, consistency and evidence breadth: High requires at least two independent strong signals; contradictions and skipped items lower confidence, never your scores. Quick mode is capped at Medium.

Where AI is — and isn’t

AI is never in the scoring path. Careers, degrees, traits and confidence are computed by deterministic, testable rules — the same inputs always produce the same results. AI is used only to explain finished results: the optional report narrative, feedback prose on open answers, and the “ask about your report” assistant. Remove AI entirely and every recommendation stays identical.

What we can’t measure (yet)

  • Norms: scores are criterion-referenced today, not percentile-ranked against a large peer group. Class 8–10 students get an age-appropriate question mix and their reports say plainly that scores aren’t yet adjusted across age groups. As anonymised cohorts grow, published norms and reliability statistics will follow.
  • Off-screen evidence: physical fitness (defence, sports), portfolios (design, arts) and medical standards (aviation) can’t be tested here — the report flags them as evidence to add, never silently assumes them.
  • You, fully: a 30–45 minute assessment is a strong starting point, not a verdict. Results are versioned, and retesting after 6 months shows your trajectory — abilities are developable.
  • Entrance & cost facts: seat counts, cutoffs and fees shown in reports are indicative (2024–25) and change yearly — always verify on official sites.

Career Signal is decision support for students, families and counsellors. The decision is always yours.
